, austerity has been hurting obama's economy, for the last four years. government spending has gone down in ten of the last 12 quarters. under ronald reagan and george w. bush you will find this part of economic growth and spending is pretty much all growing under the two republicans. you can see it under the graph. under reagan, it added in his first term a bit more than 6/10th of a percentage point, under bush, about half a point. under obama, it has been negative. if obama is a socialist he is terrible at it. here is the interesting thing, if the economy is shrinking because the economy is shrink, we now added new jobs, almost 200,000 jobs in december. and we added more than 150,000 jobs in january. what is amazing about this, this period was fiscal cliff element, it was what everybody was saying the economy really needed was deficit reduction. and this is a period in which we didn't come to a big deficit reduction deal. what we did is raise taxes. it cut the deficit a bit, but not a big deal. what happened to the markets? somehow we kept adding jobs and the stock market did really we

was listening to president obama call for gun control, she had no way of knowing that in a matter of only a few hours, her family would become the latest in chicago to be ripped apart by a gunshot. her 18-year-old sister was shot and killed while walking with friends, one of whom may have been the intended target. cnn's ted rowlands has moran the story. he's joining us now. what are you finding out, ted? >> reporter: well, wolf, it is just another tragic story coming out of chicago. another teenager loses her life. as you mention, a 14-year-old girl who was up on stage with the president, listening to him talk about gun violence, would soon find out that her sister was also shot and killed. when president obama returned to chicago last week to talk about gun violence, 14-year-old destiny warren was one of the high school students standing behind him. a few hours later, destiny's 18-year-old sister was shot and killed in this alley in north chicago. >> all this gun violence that's going on out here, you never think it will be your child. this is the hardest thing for me in my life. >> reporter:

a week away from president obama's state of the union address before congress. but the battles over many of the president's top priorities already are in full swing on capitol hill. both the president and lawmakers started a new push for immigration. this past week, also featured contentious hearings on u.s. defense policy and on slowing the epidemic of gun violence in america. we'll take a closer look at guns, first beginning with vice president joe biden's admission after meeting with democratic lawmakers on capitol hill. >> nothing we're going to do is going to fundamentally alter or eliminate the possibility of another mass shooting or guarantee that we will bring the deaths down to a thousand a year from what it is now. >> the government's most recent report says nearly 32,000 people died of gun injuries in 2010. many folks think the biggest obstacle to changing any of the nation's gun laws is the national rifle association. cnn crime and justice correspondent joe johns is joining us, taking a look at the money and influence at the nation's capitol. >> right, and wolf, money donated

. president obama's state of the union address is just a week from today and the president is flooding the zone. worried the federal budget could dominate and limit his agenda this year. he's pushing other issues. he's talking guns one day, immigration the next. making sure he's not drawn into a standoff with republicans over the economy which would quickly come to define his second term. today, he makes the case on immigration to business leaders, including ceos like steve case and monica lozano from his now disbanded jobs council and chief executives of coca-cola and yahoo!. he also meets with labor and progressive leaders. the meetings will focus on how immigration reform fits into his broader economic agenda. >>> homeland security secretary janet napolitano on monday brought that message to border security operations near san diego. >> our immigration system has been broken for far too long. time to fix it has come. time is of the essence. i believe the border is secure. i believe the border is a safe border. that's not to say that everything is 100%. >> today napolitano will visit
